Experience 04  ·  The Holiday Family Reunion

Thanksgiving for twelve.
Five doors to close afterward.

Thursday, November 26, 2026. A gourmet kitchen that can genuinely take a holiday dinner, a table that seats the whole family at once, an elevator for the grandparents, and five private bedrooms so three generations get their own space when the day is done. Plus a beach in November with nobody on it.

Hosting Thanksgiving at somebody's house means one family cooks, one family cleans, half the group sleeps on air mattresses, and everyone is polite about it. Renting a house that was built for twelve people changes all four of those things at once.

A kitchen that can actually host

This is the part that decides whether a holiday rental works. Sanctuary's kitchen has pro-grade appliances, a wine refrigerator, and a dining table that seats twelve — meaning the whole family eats at one table, at the same time, instead of a second shift at a card table in the next room. Two or three people can cook at once without colliding, which is the real test of a Thanksgiving kitchen.

Everything else the day needs is already in the house: full laundry for the tablecloths and the inevitable spill, a dishwasher so cleanup doesn't consume the evening, and all linens and towels so no one arrives with a carload of bedding.

The elevator made our trip easy and relaxing. We thoroughly enjoyed the firepit and hot tub. I would like to book this house in the future for our annual multi-generational family trip.

Three generations, five doors

The layout is what makes a family reunion survivable. Nobody draws the short straw, and everyone has somewhere to go at 9pm.

  • Master Suite 1 — the grandparents' room King bed, en-suite bath with heated floors, private deck facing the bay at sunrise. The elevator reaches it, which is the detail adult children quietly care about most.
  • Master Suite 2 — the hosts' room King bed, en-suite bath, private patio facing the Gulf sunset, ten steps from the fire pit. Whoever is running the dinner should take this one.
  • The Bunk Room — the cousins Four beds, a streaming TV, and games. The cousins will disappear in here for hours, which is the single most valuable feature of any family holiday house.
  • Bedroom 4 Queen bed, private half bath, overlooking the hot tub and the outdoor deck. Good for the couple with a young child, since it's close to the main living space.
  • The Carriage House Suite Queen bed, sitting area, full private bath, kitchenette, and its own entrance across a covered bridge. Thirty seconds from the family and completely separate from it — for the couple who loves everyone and needs a door that closes.

Why November on the Forgotten Coast

The summer crowds are gone and the beach is effectively yours. Evenings are made for the fire pit and the hot tub rather than the air conditioning, and the sunsets in late November come early enough that the kids are still awake for them. There's a private boardwalk to the sand two minutes from the back door — which is exactly the right distance for the walk between dinner and pie.

Getting the family here is a one-tank drive for most of the Southeast: Tallahassee about 2 hours, Birmingham 4, Atlanta 5, Nashville 5½. No holiday airport, no connecting flights, no rental car counter on the busiest travel week of the year. Anyone who does fly can land in Tallahassee. And one dog is welcome for a flat $75 per stay, so nobody has to arrange a kennel over the holiday.

The holiday week books first

A major holiday here carries a seven-night minimum, and Thanksgiving is the week that goes furthest in advance every year — one group gets it. If your family is deciding between years, this is the one to lock down early rather than late.

Planning the food in a small coastal town

Bring what you can and order the bird ahead wherever you normally would — this is a quiet stretch of coast, not a suburb with four supermarkets. St. Joe Shrimp Company is 100 yards away and sells fresh Gulf shrimp off the boat, which makes an excellent first course and a very good Friday dinner. Note that local hours thin out around the holiday: Cone Heads, five minutes away, is closed Wednesdays and Sundays even in normal weeks, so confirm before you build a plan around any restaurant that week.

Thanksgiving Day

Thursday, November 26, 2026.

One version of the day, for the person who will end up organizing it anyway.

6:50a
Coffee on Deck 1 while the bay turns gold. Whoever is cooking gets this hour alone, and should take it.
9:00a
The parade goes on in the great room, the cousins take over the bunk room TV, and the kitchen starts filling up with people who say they're helping.
10:30a
The bird goes in. Two cooks working without getting in each other's way — the whole reason this kitchen matters.
12:30p
Everyone who isn't cooking is sent down the boardwalk to the beach. Two minutes each way, and in late November there is essentially nobody else out there.
2:30p
Gulf shrimp from St. Joe Shrimp Company as a first course, passed around the island while the sides come together.
4:30p
Dinner. All twelve, one table, one shift. Wine from the refrigerator. Nobody eating in the next room.
5:45p
The Gulf sunset from Deck 2 — early enough in November that even the youngest are still awake for it.
7:15p
Pie at the fire pit, Adirondack chairs pulled around for the whole group. The cousins are roasting marshmallows they were explicitly told they had enough of.
9:00p
The kids go down in the bunk room. Three generations disperse to five separate doors, which is the part that makes everyone want to do it again next year.
10:30p
The hot tub, with almost no light pollution overhead. Cape San Blas sits in a Bortle Class 3–4 dark sky zone, and November nights are long.

The Long Game

The families who do this once put it on the calendar permanently.

One of our reviewers came for a girls' weekend, noticed the elevator and the fire pit and the hot tub, and wrote that she wanted to come back for the family's annual multi-generational trip. That's the pattern here: somebody scouts the house on a smaller trip, and the reunion follows.

If your family has been talking for years about doing the holiday somewhere that isn't anyone's dining room, this is the version of that idea that actually works.

Thanksgiving is one group, one week.

Send the family's dates and headcount and we'll confirm whether the holiday week is still open, what the seven-night minimum means for your travel days, and anything you need to know before you tell everyone it's happening.
