the owners of Sanctuary

Many vacation rental listings are designed to get you to book before you ask the wrong question. I want you to ask every question.

Here's what I'll tell you that the listing won't: Sanctuary is genuinely better in person than in the photos. The sunrise on Deck 1 is the kind of thing people text home about on day one. The Gulf really is 2 minutes away — not two minutes from the nearest beach access sign, but two minutes from the back door to your feet in the sand. And the sunset from Deck 2 has stopped mid-sentence conversations more times than I can count.

Two things nobody puts in a listing. The first is the dark. There's almost no light pollution out here — 90% of the cape is protected land — and Cape San Blas sits in a Bortle Class 3–4 dark sky zone, one of the darkest stretches of the Florida Gulf Coast. Verify current conditions at lightpollutionmap.info (coordinates: 29.7013, −85.3644). Once the sun is down, the sky fills in. Guests who came for the beach end up on Deck 2 at eleven at night, stargazing flat on their backs, arguing about which smudge is the Milky Way. Bring a blanket. That's the whole setup.

The second is scalloping. From the bay side, a few minutes from the house, you can wade or kayak out over the grass beds and pick scallops up off the bottom with your hands — kids are usually better at spotting them than the adults. The 2026 St. Joseph Bay scalloping season runs August 16–September 24 (Florida FWC — myfwc.com; verify dates annually before booking). Get a Florida saltwater license, plan on cleaning your catch outside, and count on talking about it for years afterward.
